I have received a few complaints about it not working properly. While not all of these issue are reproducible, the number of complaints is concerning. As a precautionary measure, I have removed it form the app catalog until a fully compatible update is released. Follow @neathings on twitter to make sure you don’t miss it!

Update:

So it turns out the method used by SleepTimer will only stop music on the TouchPad if the app playing the music is one that runs in the phone emulator. Unfortunately, this means SleepTimer no longer works with newer versions of webOS, and will remain out of the app catalog indefinitely, unless something changes.

Now that the pre 2 can finally be pre-ordered through HP Wireless Central, some people have already decided that the phone should not be purchased. Check any forum and you hear all the usual phrases: Too little too late, epic fail, who would buy this, etc… While some comments are just plain rude, one common theme that keeps popping up that confuses me is people stating that the phone should not be released since the pre 3 is just around the corner. Firstly, the pre 2 is not a bad device, but more importantly, there is no reason why HP should not sell the phone.

The pre 2 is a great device. It’s got some amazing hardware including a speedy processor and plenty of ram. Sure, it might be missing a few things like an auto focus camera and a compass, but all the main staples that make a smartphone are indeed present. Best of all, this device will be running webOS 2.0. That alone sets the pre 2 apart from any phone on the market today.

Therein lies the problem that some people have. Clearly the pre 2 is the best webOS phone on the market today, but what about when the pre 3 comes out? Clearly the pre 3 is superior to the pre 2 in every aspect – or is it? The pre 3 is larger and will undoubtedly be more expensive than the pre 2. Depending on who you are, these can be some seriously negative attributes. While the both phones will run the same webOS, they are not the same phone. One is not a replacement of the other. The two devices are very different sizes, and will most likely have very different costs. They are two different phones that can very easily coexist with each other.

Some people claim that HP is out of touch with the community. I have to disagree with this. Different people have different opinions, and just because you disagree does not mean someone is wrong. Some people want a smaller phone. Some people want a less expensive phone. Some people are content with 1 GHz instead of 1.4. Some people think 3.1″ is more than enough to check their email, play some games, and browse the web. For these people, there is the pre 2.

Then, of course, there is the Veer. The one thing I personally hate about smartphones is how much space they take up in my pocket. The Veer solves this problem. It’s tiny (and I mean tiny), yet it runs the same full featured webOS 2.0 as its bigger siblings. Yes there are some trade-offs to make a phone that small, but for some people this will be worth it.

If you step back and look at the big picture, HP clearly knows what they are doing. The pre 3 is an amazing flagship webOS device. The Veer is a lower powered, but more pocketable, device. When you see these two ends of the spectrum, it’s clear that the pre 2 fits right in the middle. It has its place. Whether or not it get’s marketed properly, and does well in sales — well, that’s a whole different story.

It’s an exciting time for webOS. Let’s make the most of it.

More and more webOS developers are starting to include video demos of their apps, which is great. Unfortunately, capturing your app on video can be somewhat difficult. One way around this is to use the emulator on your PC to run the app and screen recording software to record the emulator running your app. While this works great, it has one major limitation: you can see the mouse cursor. This looks strange to people who are not developers, and it looks even more strange when you view the video on your phone and see a little mouse cursor running around on an app.

To fix this, I created a custom mouse cursor. It’s a small gray transparent circle that represents a finger interacting with your app. Most screen recording software will let you change the mouse cursor. I use CamStudio, and it is a very simple process. To see it in action, as well as how to set it up with CamStudio, watch the video at the end of this post (if you just want to see what it looks like jump to the end of the video). If you try this out, be aware that CamStudio will not show the change of your cursor while recording – it will still look like you are using your normal mouse cursor. The recording, however, will have the custom cursor applied to it.

If your screen recording software does not allow you to change your mouse cursor, you can either switch to CamStudio, or go into your mouse settings and change your cursor there.

One thing that is important to note about using the virtual finger, is to make sure you move it out of the way when it does not need to be there. Just think of it like a real finger that you need to move out of the way to see or type.

While I have only developed for webOS, this cursor and emulator combo should, in theory, work for iOS and Android app demos as well. If you give it a shot, leave a comment with your results!

The cursor is free for anyone to use for any purpose. Download it here.

Simply set how long you want your music to continue to play, and SleepTimer will automatically stop your music for you. It is compatible with most music players for webOS*.

Start listening to music using your favorite music app, then open up SleepTimer and choose how long you want your music to play. It’s that easy! A notification will appear to let you know the timer is working, even if you close the app. You can stop or change the timer at any time you like.

Not happy with the preset timers? Just pick ‘other’ and enter in any amount time you would like – or set a specific time to stop the music. All of your settings are saved so you don’t have to keep picking the same timers over and over every day. You can even tell SleepTimer to auto start your saved timer every time you launch the app!

The use of SleepTimer isn’t limited to just sleeping. It works great with any situation where you need your music to stop after a set amount of time. Such activities include: working out, studying, and musical chairs.

*SleepTimer has been tested to work several music players. Check the support page for an updated compatibility list.

The last two updates to SleepTimer added new features that were requested by users of the app. Do you have a great idea you would like to see as part of SleepTimer? Send your comments & suggestions to support@neathings.com
